Communicating through Play:  Addressing the Unique Needs of the Intensive Care Population
Play is how children communicate their innermost thoughts, understanding, and emotions. But what happens when a child is unable to play or speak on his own, or movement is limited due to diagnosis, trauma, or treatment?
This 2 week intensive taught by an Certified Child Life Specialist working in an ICU setting addresses the unique needs of children who may be intubated and awake,experience low muscle tone, or have ICU syndrome. Using interactive hands-on tools participants will learn about and problem solve strategies that facilitate play and communication, learn tools for vicarious play, adapting play for various circumstances, and reinforce mastery and control in an environment that often offers little to none.

Understanding the Psychosocial Needs of Children and Families Living with Type 1 Diabetes
 The 2 week intensive Understanding the Psychosocial Needs of Children and Families Living with Type 1 Diabetes will focus on diagnosis, treatment, and living with type 1 Diabetes.Through the use of hands-on interactive assignments, synchronous webinars, readings, and video students will learn how to create developmental explanations for Diabetes, treatment, and care, as well as support families as they learn to integrate treatment into daily life and educate the community.

What about Me? Working with Siblings of Children with a Life Threatening Illness, is a two week intensive that will focus on working with siblings that have a brother or sister undergoing treatment for a life threatening illness.Through the use of collaborative assignments, synchronous webinars, and readings, students will learn how to recognize typical sibling reactions and behaviors, provide appropriate interventions with individual siblings, and work with siblings in a group setting.

Utilizing Child Life Services to Reduce the Risk of Re-Traumatization During Child Abuse Evaluations is a two-week course that will provide an overview on how child life can help children cope with the investigative procedures following an allegation of child abuse.Through assignments, case studies, readings and synchronous webinars, attendees will learn how child life interventions are implemented with this population and what impact child life has on the child’s experience.

This 6 week online course taught by 2 certified child life specialists will prepare participants for taking the child life certification exam.Through assignments, weekly chats, and forum discussions participants will review content in the three areas of Assessment, Intervention, and Professional Responsibility, create study tools, develop test taking strategies, as well as learn effective anxiety reducing techniques.
